Torness area, East Lothian
Overview of planned onshore works:
In Torness, East Lothian, a new converter station, located adjacent to existing industrial facilities, will connect into a new substation near Branxton to tie into the existing transmission network. The new Branxton substation is being delivered separately by SPEN. You can find out more about the substation on SPEN’s website.
Underground onshore cables will be installed to connect the substation to the converter station and from the converter station to the landfall point south of Thorntonloch beach.
- The construction of a new converter station (next to Viridor’s Energy Recovery Facility)
- The installation of underground cables to connect the new converter station to a new substation being built by SP Energy Networks under a separate project
- Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) activities from land to sea
- The installation of underground cables connecting the converter station with the landfall point just south of Thorntonloch Beach
- Temporary works, such as site welfare compounds and access roads to facilitate the construction and installation of the above
